The Necessary Hero (Archetype)

element of our society, demanding acknowledgment
and validation. Heroes traditionally appear in
"myths" or hero stories as the central characters.
"Myths" satisfy our "hunger for community."
The hero embodies the values of a community. The
myth of the homeland is symbolized by the hero,
upon whom are projected the highest aims of the
community. Without the hero the community lacks a
crucial dimension, for the hero is typically the
soul of the community. When a community loses the
ability to produce hero stories, there is a
corresponding loss of the ability to articulate
