Currently Accepted Definition Of Death
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. With the agonizing demise of Terri Schiavo, the question of what defines death has come to the forefront of philosophical and medical debate. When is a person dead? When they can no longer take care of themselves? When they have no quality of life? When there is no hope for reversal of deterioration of brain and other organs should the individual awaken from a coma? Indeed, while one might surmise how the definition of death is quite finite and straightforward, it has proven to be anything but. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Cyborg or Quality of Life?
[ send me this paper ]
A 13 page paper discussing where IT should go in supporting "bionics" research. Biomedical and biomechanical research is totally dependent on the availability of high-volume and high-dependability computing systems. The fears of creating a cyborg are ill founded. Though they make great entertainment and provide many ideas for philosophical exercise, they cannot overcome the laws of physics on which reality is based. The benefits of biomedical enhancement are clear, however. They have the ability not only to improve afflicted individuals' quality of life in practical terms, but also to carry positive effect in sociological realms. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Detailed Overview Of Euthanasia
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The concept of euthanasia is one that prevents terminally ill patients from having to endure one more moment of an artificial existence. Being kept alive through the intervention of drugs and other invasive treatments goes against the very grain of what is known as one's quality of life. In order to have quality of life, the patient must be in such a frame of mind and body where life is a pleasure and not merely a perpetual struggle. A person who is suffering from a terminal illness inevitably experiences many things that affect the daily routine. It is not long before the patient is forced to depend upon others to do many of the menial tasks that once were a simple part of everyday life. As this occurs, patients encounter feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy, believing that they have become a burden to those around them. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Dilemmas with Artificial Insemination
[ send me this paper ]
A 16 page paper focusing on whether the child resulting from artificial insemination could sue for child support in the future. Artificial insemination is not a new concept. It has been used for years for couples who have not been able to conceive on their own; more recently single women are seeking motherhood through this route. Couples still represent 60 percent of sperm banks customers, but this statistic also reveals that 40 percent of their customers are single women. Purchasers of sperm sign contracts waiving any right to seek financial support in the future, but there is strong growth in artificial insemination that does not use the services of a sperm bank and is not protected from that claim. Further, laws are exercised according to interpretation at the time. If social values shift over time, then the contracts signed today could be ruled as being worthless in the future. It is not likely today that a donor will be held to be responsible for a child financially, but that could change in the future. Bibliography lists 11 sources. Includes a 1-page research proposal.
