Chaim Potok's "My Name Is Asher Lev": The Struggle To Be True To Oneself
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The primary theme throughout the literary artistry of author Chaim Potok revolves around Jewish pride, familial relationships and accepting one's heritage. A strained cultural home life complicated by Lev's need to exhibit his pain through art in "My Name is Asher Lev" effectively illustrates how Potok is quite successful at telling tales of cultural struggle and the inherent commitment that accompanies it. In portraying the characterization of these various bonds and relationships, the author's quintessential components are to draw together the very basic qualities that exist within the confines of Jewish and Christian cultures. Characterization in 2 Sci.Fi. Stories
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses 2 short stories. George Martin, a science fiction writer, expressed in an interview (Locus, December 2005, 69) that he felt that too often science fiction and fantasy fiction paints characters as being black-and-white and, furthermore, that to humanize them with shades of gray requires multiple viewpoints on a conflict. Two fantasy stories that illustrate Martin's point and offer complex characterization are Poul Anderson's "A Tale of Hauk" and Judith Tarr's "Death and the Lady." In both of these short stories, the characters take on depth and nuance because the authors skillfully show that their main characters have self-doubt and faults, as well as heroic virtues.
