Symbols and Symbolism as Indicative of Key Themes in Ibsens A Dolls House and Anouilhs Antigone
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing symbols and symbolism in relation to the themes found in Henrik Ibsens play A Dolls House and Jean Anouilhs play Antigone. Both Ibsen in A Dolls House and Anouilh in Antigone use symbolism to express themes throughout their plays. The central characters of Nora and Antigone are both seen as childish in their use of childhood items such as Nora playing hide and seek and Antigone using a small shovel and childs clothing. Their symbolism is much deeper however as both characters also symbolize the societies at the time the plays were written. Noras character is constantly being referred to using animal imagery and her hiding of objects from her husband depicts the theme of her inequality in her household and the inequality of women in the 1800s. Antigones character symbolizes the French resistance and the sacrifice she had to make to remain true to her ideals against the oppressive king, or in Frances case, the occupying Germans.
