Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening' / Edna's Resurrecting Soul

The Other is expressed in the soul of Edna as both black and a 'domesticated' woman. It is also reflected of the soul housed in the construct of the body. All of these souls need releasing, which Chopin displays through imagery of flight as it is reflected in the warnings and subtleties of birds in flight. Chopin also uses water imagery as the residence of the soul, where contemplation of the soul is learned, as in Edna learning to swim, and also where the truth of the soul awaits in the sea like a lover.
