A Comparison of Slavery in Greek and Roman Times with Slavery in the Americas

A 12 page review of the institution of slavery in ancient times and that which existed in the 'New World' after colonization by European peoples. Discusses the encomienda system in Central and South America which essentially enslaved the Native Americans of the region and the use of black slaves in the Americas as well. Provides period quotes from Frederick Douglass and Alexis Tocqueville illustrating two different views of black slavery in the Americas. Compares the similarities and differences and summarizes that in the Americas the distinction between slave and master was more often racially based and therefore the slave seldom achieved a societal position of equal which was possible in Rome and Greece. Concludes that in reality the fight had no real bearing on Douglass' real crusade against slavery or his determination to attain freedom. Points out that Douglass' real impetus for freedom came from his quest for knowledge and that it was not Douglass' brawn that allowed him to succeed in escaping the bonds of slavery but his brains. In this book Morgan examines the economic and demographic development of early Virginia. The fact that a love for liberty and equality in the American colonies developed simultaneously with a reliance on the institution of slavery is the central dichotomy in the study of early American history. Morgan examines this relation and postulates that the experience of Virginia is indicative and applicable to the rest of the colonies regarding the issue of slavery. No additional sources cited.

A 9 page paper discussing opinions surrounding the issue of freedom as it relates to all aspects of life in regards to two separate pieces of work. One piece of work is The Lowell Offering, edited by Benita Eisler, and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass. The Lowell Offering is a book which is a compilation of narratives by the mill working woman. These women were free and worked for a wage. In Frederick Douglass's book he was a slave and later became a free man. There are many similarities and differences but the question that needs to be addressed and answered, based on these two works, is whether or not the institution of slavery was better at taking care of the worker than the industries that offered them jobs.
