This is a 4 page paper comparing the characters of June from Amy Tan�s �The Joy Luck Club� and Antonia in Willa Cather�s �My Antonia�. The characters of June in Amy Tan�s �The Joy Luck Club� and Antonia in Willa Cather�s �My Antonia� differ a great deal in their process of assimilation into American society. Both women feel removed from American society based on their ethnic heritage however both women follow different processes in regards to their maturation and acceptance of their dual identities. Tan�s June feels that her process of Americanization involves dismissing and pulling away from the Chinese stories, language and the traditions of her mother. It is not until June visits China that she realizes she is able to grasp both her American and Chinese identities as her own in her life in America. Antonia and her Bohemian community are separated from American society by their language and ethnic traditions. Antonia however, despite this knowledge of what separates her from American society, nevertheless remains aware of her cultural identity and her language. She too, later in life, is able to accept her dual identity within American society not only for herself but also for her children with whom she has continued her Bohemian language and culture.

The Construct of Ethnicity as revealed in Nella Larsen�s �Quicksand�, Amy Tan�s �The Joy Luck Club�, and Toni Morrison�s �Paradise�

A 15 page discussion of ethnicity as it is reflected in these three novels. The author of this paper emphasizes that the constructs of ethnicity be interpreted in either positive or negative ways. Larsen�s novel, for example, provides us with a glimpse of the many negativities associated with being of mixed white and black heritage in the 1920s while Morrison�s novel reveals that even all-black communities and the individuals that live within them can be fraught with trouble and dissent. Amy Tan�s �The Joy Luck Club�, however, provides a much more positive look at the challenges and potential rewards which can be associated with ethnicity. No additional sources are listed.

The Crisis Between Taiwan and China: Suggested U.S. Strategy

After over fifteen years of multilateral and bilateral negotiations with members of the GATT and then WTO member nations, China was accepted as a member in the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1999 and its membership was activated in December 2001. The economic impact from this membership has been felt on international, national, private and labor levels. China has increased its GDP by almost 8 percent and its exports by almost 20 percent which has led China to become the fourth largest trading body in the world. While labor has begun to shift within the country from the agricultural sectors to the industrial sectors, private Chinese enterprises have also experienced a growth in revenue as the WTO has allowed them recognition in international trade; recognition they were previously denied.
