The Impact of Trade Embargoes
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper. Often used by the United States in response to either human rights or military issues intervention, economic sanctions have been thought to be effective and productive. Woodrow Wilson believed that economic sanctions were an 'economic, peaceful, silent, deadly enemy.' That position is being rethought by many, however, particularly in the area of trade embargoes. Examined here are the embargoes against the former Soviet Union for the invasion of Afghanistan, Cuba and Iraq, with the lesson that such embargoes are only effective when the leaders are concerned with the welfare of their people. Cuba may be coming around; Iraq is still chanting 'death to America.' Bibliography lists 6 sources.
